CEDIM

The Center for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Technology (CEDIM) is an interdisciplinary research center at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in the fields of disasters, risks, and security. It was established to understand better, detect earlier, and manage natural and anthropogenic risks.

The main goal of CEDIM is to advance our scientific understanding of natural and man-made hazards, and to develop disaster management solutions for the early detection and reduction of the related risks. CEDIM is dedicated to developing technologies and tools in the areas of risk assessment, risk communication and management in a world with increasing population, rapid urbanization and the growing threat associated with climate change. To achieve this, CEDIM employs interdisciplinary competence and synergies between its affiliated institutions and cooperates with emergency management at international, national, state and community levels.

CEDIM History

CEDIM was founded in 2002 as a virtual institute between the German GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ) and the former University of Karlsruhe (TH). In 2007 the former Research Centre Karlsruhe (FZK) was added. With the establishment of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in 2009 (fusion of the University Karlsruhe and FZK), CEDIM was passed on as a joint facility of KIT and GFZ. Following the termination of the cooperation agreement by the GFZ and based on a decision of the KIT presidential committee, CEDIM is passed into in the sole responsibility of KIT on 1 January 2016.
